Service Projects
Kara Women and Child Refuge
With Vicki de Carle being the contact, members painted, cleared gutters and moved furniture for the residents of the refuge house. Thanks to Ted Crawley, Trevor Walker, John and Sue Garwood and John Perks.
Annette's Garden
Under the eye of Don Tee, members of the Club cleaned up Annette's garden and improved her driveway. I think that this was one of the most meaningful projects that we did this year. Thanks to all who helped.
Fund Raising Projects
Battle of Long Tan Commemoration
Once again the Rotary Club of Woy Woy was asked to assist in the moving and setting up of some 80 chairs and lectern at the Long Tan Memorial on Ettalong Beach then returning these items back to the Ettalong Beach Club Resort after the ceremony. This year the ceremony was held on Saturday 8th August 2009. The Vietnam Veterans appreciate our assistance each year, on this their day. We have been involved with this project for some years now. Many thanks must go to PP. Don Tee and John Mulder who give up their time to perform this very worthwhile task.
Melbourne Cup Trifecta
This year we sold three complete sets of trifecta tickets from 26th October to 3rd November 2009. Our Club prints the tickets and has a fellowship night to staple the tickets together. We have organised this event for over 30 years.
Net Income for the Club - $4393. Wonderful opportunity to show the Rotary Banner in our local shopping centre, and has a flow-on effect for membership.
Oyster Festival
The Club was invited to run the BBQ again this year. This was well supported by the members and an amount of $1391 was raised.
This was the third year our Rotary Club was invited to participate in the Oyster Festival held 7th November 2009 at Ettalong Beach. We did so by providing a variety of sausage, bacon, egg and steak sandwiches and selling cold soft drinks. We sold all our food on the day and managed to cook over 750 sandwiches. Very few soft drinks were left and all members had a great day of fellowship.
Great public awareness was gained as our Rotary Tent was on display together with our roll-out information banner. I am proud to say on the day, we also met all food safety standards, after a Gosford Council Health Inspector went over our tent.
Campbell's Trade GoIf Day
This event is now another annual addition to yearly and our Club was invited to cook a BBQ breakfast for the players, run a betting hole at the 6th and if we wanted to, rlun a raffle. So of course we put a raffle together with the first prize of a $600 gas B-B-Q being donated to us by Campbell's Timber Hardware. The end result was $2036 raised on the day with all proceeds being shared between the PCYC and Ocean Beach Surf Club. Promoting Rotary in the Timber and Hardware Trade Industry, at no cost to the Club as all B-B-Q provisions were provided by Campbell's. Many thanks to PP. Ted Crawley for putting it together.
Thanks also to the support from Campbell's Home Hardware for inviting us.
Flora Festival
By assisting the Rotary club of Kariong/Somersby we were paid $1200 for helping with the parking.
Bowel Scan
Although we are only on the sideline on this project, an amount of $8650 was handled by the Club.
The Bowelscan Program on the Central Coast starts early June and finishes mid July each year. Our Club distributes the kits to Chemist shops in Woy Woy and Ocean Beach Road, Umina Beach. This involves the distribution and collection of the completed kits for testing weekly and collection of all unused kits and monies at the completion of the period.
Australia Day Celebrations
The event was held between 2pm to 9.30pm on 26th January, 2010 at Anderson's Rotary Park on the waterfront at Woy Woy. Chairman of this event was PP. Charles Brock and involves working in conjunction with: Gosford City Council, Woy Woy and Peninsular Lions Club, Sea Scouts, Gosford City Arts Council, and local Indigenous Groups. This was the fourth year Rotary has been involved. This was also the fourth year a lantern procession had been held on the Central Coast and this involved having the lanterns made by local groups, painted and paraded on the night. Whilst this operation was conducted by the arts group in four locations it all had to be brought together to fit into a single operation on the night. One large lantern was made in the form of a fish, and this was erected in the channel. Over 200 smaller lanterns were made involving local school children who paraded with these lanterns on the night.
The overall set-up for the day included some 40 stall holders selling food, drinks, balloons and general fair type items. The Vietnam Veterans brought along the Nam Bus for display and proved popular on the day. Children's activities included giant slides, jumping castles and colouring in competitions. The Central Coast Veteran Car Club displayed their vintage cars (PP. Roy Bunney brought along two of his cars). A new addition to this was the Twin Lakes Car Club from the Entrance who came along with some six classic cars. The Umina Beach surf Club had their boat an display and ran a bucket donation earning them some $1100. Sea FM Radio Station set up a tent and did face painting for the children, handed out drinks, lamingtons and Australian flags as well as live broadcasts. The Committee handed out over 3000 Australian flags and stickers on the day.
For the adults, local Central Coast artists provided non-stop singing, dancing and entertainment on the stage of Australian theme songs and music. The music started at 2.00pm with the Central Coast Concert Band and concluded at 9-15pm. The lantern procession started at 8-30pm and then the fireworks at approx 9.15pm. The event was attended by an estimated crowd of between 10,00 to 12,000 people. A major highlight for the evening was the appearance of John Paul Young, Warren Morgan and Ronnie Peal.
It was a combined effort of Rotary working with local community groups, and we have come a long way to bring the community of Woy Woy together. Many of our Rotarians were involved in various roles with this major event, which is financed and backed by Gosford City Council. This year we saw a zero tolerance on alcohol, and this had a major impact on the quality of the event. The Local Police Command did a magnificent job in enforcing this task.
Australia Day Box Trailer Raffle
Under the watchful eye of PP. Charles Brock and with a lot of support from Maggie Payne and Vicki de Carle plus Club members, we raised $10,840.00.
ANZAC Dawn Service
We provide candles to all attending the dawn service from 4.30am. In addition we also provide Tea or Coffee together with Anzac biscuits cooked by Jenny Brock. Our Club has been providing this Service to the RSL for over 15 years now, and each year the RSL invite us back to attend and provide this very touching extra to the dawn service. A wonderful opportunity to show the community that Rotary cares. Many thanks again to PP's Don, Sue and Honorary Member, John Mulder for getting up early and to all the Rotarians and partners who attend and give a hand.
Opera in the Arboretum
Once again this year we had a very successful opera. Many thanks to Vicki de Carle and Maggie Payne, our two super charged ladies, plus ticket sellers Jayne and Peter Mote and John and Susan Garwood. To those who assisted on the day you were all greatly appreciated, without your help this would not be a success. At this stage the profit is $28659.00.
Thank you to all the members and partners who have made this year such a success and thank you President Peter for your support this year.
